I sit here with my children, ages 11 and 9. They'd never heard "Virginia's letter." Mr. Church's reply was simply wonderful and we are so blessed to have been given the opportunity by you to have read it. Just because things cannot be seen, it does not mean they are not real. Thank you so very much for the beautiful site...I have truly enjoyed it as it's brought back many wonderful childhood memories, and is a stepping stone in the memories being made by my own children. Have a blessed Christmas, everyone!

I would like to thank you for 'Virginia's letter We are refreshed by its simple but uplifting message, I have being working with Santa Claus in Lapland for a number of years and we are always happy to see the children of the world having a wonderful time. At this time we have to understand there are many children out there that do not get a chance to see the wonderful side of Christmas, and we hope and pray that like 'Virginia's letter people will belive and give hope where there is none and to give peace and good will for everyone Thank you

What ever happened to Virginia's original letter ? I thought I saw an episode of "Antiques Roadshow" where the letter was shown by her descendants and it was appraised at a HIGH $$$$ figure. With so many hoaxes out there, I'm wondering why the original letter isn't in the Smithsonian. Any clues ???

When I was about 10 or so, I had my doubts about Santa. Mom read me the yes Virginia story. I always kept this in my mind. I am now 52. I really think there is a Santa if you have a belief . The funny thing is I shouldn't believe in him, as I am Jewish. Mom always wanted us to fit in . What the heck there is Hanuka Harry too.

I just got a look at your wonderful 'Links' page. I wanted to thank and congratulate you again, for a wonderful, intelligent, informative resource. This 'Links' page ----- like The Sun editorial page ---- shows a great love for humanity, truth, the English language, the printed word and great writing. It's rare to find such a page on the 'Net-----and, believe me, I've tried. God bless you again, and thanks for this treasure. Merry Christmas!!

This Website is quite a blessing! Like a few others, I found this site while searching on Google for Frank Church's editorial answer to Virginia O'Hanlon's inquiry. If I hadn't already known there was a Santa, I would now, because Santa brought me the gift of this wonderful Website!! I hope you don't mind if I link to your Website from mine. God bless you.

Thank you for keeping this safe...it is an important message to pass along to others. I am an "older" American now and at lunch today with a group of very young colleagues (most under 35), one of the mothers told of her distress last evening when her twin boys went snooping into the parent's closet while they were out on an errand and indeed, found the gifts, but were very confused as they still believed, (or desparately wanted to beleive)that Santa brought the gifts, not Mom and Dad! However, how could they confront and ask...since the house rule was stay out of parents bedroom!! However, being a perceptive Mom, my colleague and friend knew right away that something was amiss as she looked upon the twins dutifully doing homework at the kitchen table! So she checked on her closet, and all was in place as she had left it, BUT the sliding doors were reversed and a belt had fallen off a hook and not been noticed! So, back to the kitchen where she found two very upset boys, who were as distressed to have been "found out" as they were to have finally learned that what the other kids had said was true in their family as well. Gifts came from Mom and Dad, not Santa. I then said that clearly the twins were grown up enough now for the "Dear Virginia" letter and no one at the table had the faintest idea what I was talking about. So I promsied to try to find it and here you are! Thank you. I have forwarded it to all the folks at the table and asked them in turn to send it along. Thank you again and have a happy holiday and a healthy new year.

I stumbled upon your web site while looking for something to use at our church Christmas fellowship. Ever since I was a little girl (amd I am soon to turn 60), every Christmas someone is always asking me "Virginia, is there really a Santa Claus"? My answer is always the same, if you believe --- there will always be a Santa. We always told our two children the same thing and that's what we will tell our grandchildren. I really enjoyed reading the editorial again and I plan to use it for part of my program to remind everyone that there really is a Santa Claus. Thank you for such a nice web site!!

I am 34 and going back to college to pursue a degree. I was asked to read and submit an "editorial" along with comments from the story. I read this one first and thought...No not this one. It stuck in my mind for quite some time and I decided to go ahead with it anyway. Thanks for the background information you have with the story. I don't know my grade yet but who could put a bad mark on something like this.....

A young man, age 30, told me this holiday season, that he stopped believing in Santa Claus when he was a young boy. His parents told him there is no Santa. We took him to the Nutcracker Ballet, his first experience with that beloved story. Now, thanks to your website, a copy of "Yes, Virginia...." will be lovingly tucked into his Christmas stocking, by Santa, of course. It's wonderful to see the young man-boy get back the magic of Christmas. Thank you.

Dear Jim, I stumbled upon your wonderful testimony to Francis P. Church's timeless editorial, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." I was quoting the editorial in a letter to a friend and decided to look the story up on the Internet. Google.com took me right to your site! For a few brief minutes I was able to escape to another time, another place. Far back to the late 40s, early 50s, when--like little Virginia O'Hanlon 105 years ago--I, too, had the same question. Mr. Church's piece is as good a testiment now, as it was when it was first printed in The New York Sun in 1897. What a wonderful story about faith, optimism, and youthful innocence. I remember the editorial every Christmas, and now, particularly, I am reminded of it again. You see, at the ripe 'young' age of 58, I now have a three and a half year old 'Virginia,' even though her real name is Taylor. Taylor is at the age when Santa is still an question mark. A chubby little old man that sometimes delights her and at other times, frightens her. This year will be another 'test' of how she reacts to 'Santa.' But, regardless, just seeing her joy on Christmas morning is a delight to behold. Worth ALL my 58 years! While Francis Church has been gone for nearly a hundred years, and the 'original' Virginia for nearly thirty-two years, their message will live on--as Mr. Church so aptly said--for ten times 10,000 years. While the birth of Christ is the real celebration of Christmas, for children the world over, Virginia's question, and Mr. Church's reply, is what the Holiday Season is all about. May we never forget the wonderful story that both of them shared so unselfishly with the world. May this year's Christmas be especially 'merry and bright' to you and yours.

I do believe in Santa claus and all the traditition that goes with it?? Currently at the moment santa is being banned from schools because a man has taken the rights away from children who do beleive. I do believe in him even he will be around for a thousand years to come. If not in spirt but our hearts and minds

I first read 'Yes Virginia' when my daughter started school and her Grand Mother, my Mother, did not want her to hear from other children that Santa was not real. Yes, that was 32 years ago when we first read 'Yes Virginia' together. Santa brings joy to so many. Let children be children and do not make them grow up too soon. Happy Holidays

Thank you so much for posting this letter to Virginia. My father, who died when I was 16, told me about this letter when I was a little girl enquiring about the existence of Santa. I'm 29 now and still believe in Santa and everything he represents. I'm so grateful to have had Pagan parents who never told me that unseen forces in our vast and infinite universe don't exist. I was always allowed to believe. Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to read a piece of classic American literature that my father so loved and cherished. I wish he was still alive so he could see your site. It's a beautiful tribute to my favorite time of year.

I am 53 years old and still believe that the Santa Clause philosophy is one that all of us should aspire to. It can be related to the realization of Scrouge. My life has revolved around my belief in the benefit of the Santa Claus philosophy. Santa Claus is a modern day pretend Christ (or other religious symbol.) I have always told my children (& I will tell my grandson) that when one professes not to believe in Santa then Santa can no longer bring them presents. You don't have to tell anyone of your secret beliefs. If your friends say there is no Santa then it's too bad for them. Secret dreams make us ourselves and being true to yourself is most iomportant.

I am a tour guide on a Gray Line double decker bus in Manhattan. On the downtown tour, we pass the former New York Sun newspaper building. I was taught by Lee Gelber, tour director for Gray Line, that the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" letter was printed in the Sun. I just had to see it! Your website is beautiful. I love the bios on Virginia and Mr. Church. Also love the sparkling stars that travel when the mouse moves. Will share with my fellow tour guides and friends. Thank you!

Gracias, I very much appreciate the inclusion of "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" on your web site. For too many years, "believing" has been extremely difficult due to to many family tragedies. But one year, long ago, I saw the movie for the first time on television. Since then, it has become my favorite must see at holiday time. It has uplifted and sustained me during the Christmas holiday even with more tragedy these recent years. I continue to search for a source so that I can buy the movie, sometimes it becomes very difficult to find the movie on TV. I have always wanted to have the write-up of the letter, and now I do. Again, Gracias (thank you)

Like you Jim, I have gone around with my diet. I have tried the Atkins diet, Vegetarian, High Carb, etc. Now I try to eat meat 1 or 2 times a week. Lately, I have been getting into grains (oats, millet, barley, etc.) and try to eat them at least once a day. I also make all of the bread eaten in my house, using organic flour. And, of course, vegetables, vegetables and more vegetables.

I will give the story of "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" to my teenager son who incredibly seems to still believe in a Santa Claus. Of course he has doubted its existence but at the same time has been unable to deny it. I put a small present from a Santa Claus just beside his pillow on Christmas eve. And my son, who had always expressed his joy the following morning until last year, said nothing this year, didn't mention even now (late afternoon of the 26th in Japan) the fact he got the present. I really hope that he understands my intention and the meaning of Santa Claus.

Francis P. Church´s story is the best Christmas story ever written. I read it out at the Christmas Party of our Ski-Club in Winterscheid yesterday. I live in Northern Hesse where all the fairy tales of the Grimm brothers originate. At this time of the year I remember a GI that I met when I was a little boy way back in the 60s. He gave me some chocolate. I only remember he was from Pittsburgh. Whoever he was and wherever he might be right now I know it is because of him that I am free. Merry Christmas to you, Francis P. Church and Virginia wherever they might be right now. yours sincerely

I want to thank you for your effort to keep christmas as a spiritual and not a commercial event. Here in King County, Washington people are encouraged by a King County official not to wish Merry Christmas, but to be sensitive towards people with other religions and be politically correct and not offend anybody. That was a sad experience for me as I come from Europe where Christmas is a bit more traditional than here. Your site is so great. I love it and will forward it to my friend. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYBODY

Please forgive me if this is a little long, but I had to share this with everyone I could. Today at work a lady I used to work with in another department came up to me and told me to come get her at my break time, for she had some Christmas presents for my children (Syrina is 6 going on 7 next month, Caitlin will be 5 in March and Alexis just turned 1 this past October). When she said that, I was touched by her generosity but figured it would be something small - a few gifts, maybe one for each child. I went to get her at my break time and we went out to her truck - an SUV. She opened the back of the truck and my eyes popped out of my head, my jaw hit the ground. It was absolutely FILLED with toys for my kids. Everything - even 2 particular things that were on my list to get them. I looked at her and started to cry. If I were to not spend one dollar on my children, they would still have at least 5-6 gifts EACH. That aquaintance, at least this year, IS Santa Claus. She has definitely helped bring Christmas to my children. Driving home and thinking about what she'd done, it reminded me of the editorial from 8 year old Virginia. I did a search and found your website. And I was right. There IS a Santa Claus. This year my friend Kate was my Santa Claus. Who's yours? :-)

We have three young grand-daughters who need to be offered another answer apart from what they will hear at school from their friends (with so called modern parents) technology is great but it's a shame that we cannot harness it for only good. The modern world moves so fast and parents often want their children to keep up. But what is keeping up, if it is becomming hard and suspicious of all and being an adult at the age of 6 then I believe we have lost the true meaning of why god entrusts parenthood in us. Your making available the editorial of Francis P Church will help keep three little girls as little girls a little longer. Many thanks & Merry Christmas. P.S. You have put technology to a wonderful use.

She said she did not know quite how to handle the matter and I brought up one of my favorite Christmas time stories the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" letter. Although she is in her late 30's she had never heard of it. I was astonished to say the least. I found your web sight and downloaded the letter. I wanted to thank you for allowing us to visit your web page to read Dear Virginia. When I finished the reading I sat and played with the cursor watching those twinkling stars as tears flowed. This meant so much to me. This is a wonderful gift in itself. I am passing it on to my grandaughters who will be turning 7 & 8 this month. Their dad in in the Navy and will be underway until around the 22nd or 23rd. I know that my daughter will appreciate this as much! Happy holidays to all~

My mother and I have been trying to find this story forever. We have the movie called Prancer with Sam Elliot in it, and he reads a passage from "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus". This has haunted us for years. Thank you so much for your website, we truely appreciate it. Was there a book written by the author of this editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus"? If you know something please contact me at my email. thanks again

Kudos to you, Jim! This is one of the most comprehensive sites I have encountered in a long, long time! I can't think of a topic (or whatever) you haven't touched on. You have links to just about everything! Believe it or not, I found you looking for a recipe for applesauce--and was directed to your food link. Happy Anniversary on 12/3!! My hubby will be 25 on 5/3--God willing. We're adding you to our favorites.Godspeed and goodnight.

I had to prove to my boss, seven years my junior, that this article DID in fact exist and was quite famous. Every year I include a "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" somewhere in our Christmas Committee minutes or postings to the employees; he thought I was nuts! :) Thank you for reaffirming my sanity and a small measure of faith in the wonder of a small child.
